ATWOnline.com, the leading source for daily airline industry news and information, launched in 1997. Here is a look back:
Boeing's decision to suspend development and marketing efforts on larger versions of the 747 leaves the way clear for Airbus to move forward on the A3XX as the only competitor in the market for ultra-large aircraft. It also marks an about-face for Boeing, which appeared to be very close to launching the 747-500/-600 last year. Instead, the company announced it would "focus its near-term product development efforts on enhanced versions" of the 767 and 777. "Sufficient market demand has not yet developed to justify committing the significant investment required to develop larger versions of the 747," BCAG President Ron Woodard said.
