747-8 completes first flight one day shy of 41st anniversary of original 747 flight

The 747-8 freighter achieved first flight yesterday, taking off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash., at around 12:40 p.m. local time following a nearly 3-hr. weather delay and landing at the same airport at 4:18 p.m., marking the start of flight testing for the latest derivative of Boeing's successful widebody program. IATA: Airline CFOs confident demand, profitability will continue to improve

IATA said executives from airlines around the world reported "a sharp improvement in the business environment" for the air transport industry in the final months of 2009 and are optimistic that conditions will continue to improve throughout the current year. [ more ]

FAA seeks comment on new pilot certification proposals

FAA yesterday published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking seeking public comment on proposals to adjust certification regulations for FAR Part 61 and 121 pilots and "to gather information on whether current eligibility, training, and qualification requirements for commercial pilot certification are adequate." Thai approves lease of 15 widebodies

The Thai Airways board announced plans to lease 15 widebody aircraft over the next five years, requiring an investment of approximately THB35 billion ($1.05 billion). [ more ]

JAL bankruptcy: Tokyo airline's restructuring likely to have global consequences

Last week's bankruptcy filing by Japan Airlines shook Japan's business and political communities as well as the international air transport industry, with potential implications reverberating well beyond the question of whether JAL can achieve a successful restructuring. Japan's new government, which only has been in office for four months, is banking on the belief that pushing the carrier into a court-monitored proceeding--rather than a more direct bailout--will force it to make deep structural changes that will lead to long-term prosperity. Airbus and Boeing both indicated at the Singapore Airshow that they are considering re-engining A320s/737s with next-generation powerplants such as CFM's LEAP-X and Pratt & Whitney's PW1000G geared turbofan. A narrowbody re-engining would be:

A smart move that would greatly improve aircraft efficiency/environmental friendliness by the middle of the decade.
Shortsighted; the manufacturers should concentrate on introducing all-new aircraft rather than re-engining and postponing next-generation narrowbodies until the 2020s.
Complicated; re-engining without any aircraft redesign won't be simple. It's no given that the new engines will fit properly.
