8:30-9:30 Session I--Green Aviation comes to the US
European governments have been far more active when it comes to taxing and regulating greenhouse gas emissions from commercial aviation. Late last year a petition was filed with the US Environmental Protection Agency requesting that the EPA regulate aviation emissions. Here’s a discussion about the whys and wherefores of the petition, the Federal Aviation Administration's role in environmental regulation, and what environmental groups think can and should be done.
- Natural Resources Defense Council, Brian Siu, Deputy Director, Vehicles & Fuels
- Federal Aviation Administration, Carl Burleson, Director of Environment and Energy
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (invited)
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Karl Simon, Director, Compliance and Innovative Strategies Division
9:30-10:30 Session 2--Industry Actions
What is the industry doing? In contrast to the image painted by some, the industry hasn’t been sitting still. In fact, attention to environmental issues has been an element of industry actions for many years.
- Air Transport Association, Nancy Young, Vice President-Environmental Affairs
- International Air Transport Association, Paul Steele, Director Aviation Environment
- Aerospace Industries Association, Howard Aylesworth, Director of Civil Aviation Environment
10:30-10:50 Networking & Refreshments
Sponsored by Boeing
10:50-12:30 Session 3--What the airlines are doing
Airlines are already working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Here’s how.
- Continental Airlines, Leah Raney, Managing Director of Global Environmental Affairs
- Air Canada, Claude Saint Martin, Manager, Fuel Efficiency, Environmental Matters
- Northwest Airlines Erin Heitkamp, Corporate Environmental Policy Engineer
- Alaska Airlines, Scott Ridge, Managing Director, Technical Operations and Support Flight Operations
12:30-2:00 Lunch
Sponsored by Pratt & Whitney
Keynote Address: Rob Fyfe, Chief Executive Officer, Air New Zealand
2:00-3:00 Session 4--Cleaning up at the Airport
Airport ground operations contribute to air pollution and ultimately GHGs. Hazardous waste materials ranging from fuel to deicing fluids must be disposed of. People must be moved between terminals and to/from parking lots. What are airports doing to improve airport operations? How do these efforts help the environment? What are the challenges and solutions?
- Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Ed Knoesel, Manager, Environmental Services, Aviation Department
- Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, M. Kristoffer Russell, Senior Environmental Operations Analyst
3:00-3:20 Networking & Refreshments
3:20-4:20 Session 5--Alternative Fuels
Biofuels, hydrogen, even algae. The industry is considering a variety of cleaner fuels. Are they practical? Is there adequate supply?
- Richard Altman, Executive Director, Commercial Aviation Alternative fuels Initiative (CAAFI)
- Dr. James Hileman, Research Engineer, FAA/Partner Project MIT
- Virgin Atlantic Airways, Sian Foster, Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility Manager
4:20-5:20 Session 6--Air Traffic Control Improvements
Air Traffic Management has a major role to play in helping airlines to reduce GHGs. Delays and routings can add up to 18% fuel burn to industry operations, sharply increasing CO 2 emissions.
- IATA, Gunther Matschnigg, Senior Vice President, Safety, Operations and Infrastructure
- Steve Bradford, Chief Scientist-Architecture & Next Gen Development, Federal Aviation Administration
5:30-7:00 Networking & Cocktail Reception
Sponsored by Rolls-Royce
Day 2: Friday, June 20, 2008
8:00-8:45 Continental Breakfast
8:45-9:45 Session 7--Emissions Trading/Carbon Offsets
There is split opinion whether this makes sense, but it may be the only “quick-fix” available. Europe has adopted emissions trading as a solution and some airlines, including a few in the USA, offer the option to passengers to buy credits. This panel will discuss the pros and cons.
-
AeroStrategy LLC, Jonas Murby, Consultant
- The Chicago Climate Exchange, Tom Cushing, Vice President
9:45-10:45 Session 8--Airframe Advances
The airframe manufacturers have green programs underway to reduce CO2, NOx and other pollutants. These involve greater use of composites, better aerodynamics and a host of other engineering advances. There is also a resurgence of the turboprop. OEMs will discuss what they are doing and when much of this technology is expected to be ready.
- Airbus, Renee Martin-Nagle, Vice President-General Counsel
- Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Billy Glover, Managing Director, Environmental Strategy
10:45-11:00 Networking & Refreshments
11:00-11:45 Session 9--Engine Solutions
Each new generation of engines has offered significant environmental improvements over the previous generation. But now current technology is reaching its limits and engine OEMs are looking to new solutions to achieve the step increases in efficiency necessary to power the next generation of aircraft while reducing their environmental footprint. Our panel of engine experts will speak candidly about their efforts to design ever more eco-friendly engines.
- Pratt & Whitney, Alan H. Epstein, Vice President, Technology & Environment
- GE Aviation, Steve Csonka, Manager, Advanced Applications-Strategy & Evaluations
- Rolls-Royce, Nuno Taborda, Business Development & Environmental Strategy
