Copa still going strong despite tough first quarter

Embraer reports profit, revenue rise on increased deliveries
Thursday May 8, 2008Embraer reported a more than tripling of its first-quarter net income to $85 million from $26.2 million in the prior year on a 60.6% surge in revenue to $1.34 billion as commercial aircraft deliveries nearly doubled to 38 compared to 20 last year. Operating income more than tripled to $48.7 million from $15.5 million in the year-ago quarter. The manufacturer delivered 15 E-175s, 17 E-190s, three ERJ-145s and three E-195s during the quarter. Its firm order backlog at quarter's end was $20.3 billion, up 26.1% over $15 billion at the end of the prior-year quarter.
Wednesday May 7, 2008Jamaican government and International Finance Corp. signed an $820,000 grant agreement with the US Trade and Development Agency "to assist with technical services for the Air Jamaica divestment process," Jamaica's Ministry of Finance and Public Service announced. The government is targeting March 2009 as its divestment deadline. Prime Minister Bruce Golding previously said that Air Jamaica lost approximately $170 million in 2007 and has accumulated losses in excess of $1 billion overall. It carried 1.7 million passengers last year.
Wednesday May 7, 2008Azul Linhas Aereas Brasileiras will be the name of JetBlue Airways founder and former Chairman and CEO David Neeleman's new Brazilian airline. The Azul moniker, Portuguese for blue, was chosen over Samba following a public vote. Neeleman is CEO of the new carrier, which is scheduled to begin flying in January and has 76 E-195 firm orders and options (ATWOnline, March 28). Azul "proposes to bypass congested hubs offering point-to-point service with exceptional quality and lower prices" and will feature the all-leather seats and satellite television popularized by JetBlue.
Weighed down by VRG, Gol swings to first-quarter loss
Friday May 2, 2008Gol reported a first-quarter net loss of BRL3.5 million ($2.1 million), reversed from a profit of BRL116.6 million in the year-ago period, as last year's acquisition of Varig and its subsequent integration with Gol weighed heavily and led to sinking load factors. [more]
LAN stays buoyant in first quarter
Thursday May 1, 2008LAN Airlines reported $91.1 million in net earnings in the first quarter, up 5.8% from the $86.1 million posted in the year-ago period, as revenue soared and its fuel hedges contributed to a positive $6 million swing. [more]
Monday April 28, 2008TAM changed the name of its cargo business from TAM Express to TAM Cargo. The growing unit generates revenue from carrying cargo in the bellies of its 110 passenger aircraft. It said it will invest BRL30 million ($17.9 million) this year on infrastructure for domestic cargo terminals and national and international freight systems. Its gross cargo revenue totaled BRL776.8 million in 2007, up 60% over 2006, comprising 9.2% of the Brazilian airline's total revenue.
Monday April 21, 2008Boeing Commercial Aviation Services reached a deal with launch customer LAN Cargo for landing gear MRO services on 767 freighters. Contract includes international access to landing gear repair and replacement.
