Frankfurt wins approval for expansion
ATW's Airports Today, September 2009, p.5
German court approved a €4 billion expansion of Frankfurt International, which will include a fourth runway and third terminal and a cargo maintenance center. The new runway could be opened for operation by 2011. Fraport AG, which manages the airport, described the approval as a "great day for the German air transportation industry and the future of the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region." It also will stimulate the economy with new jobs in an area where more than 300,000 people currently depend on the airport for their livelihoods.
The court also recommended that Fraport reduce the number of scheduled night flights from 40 to 17. Nearby residents have complained about noise and the loss of trees due to the expansion project.
Also, Fraport began construction of a $700 million A-Plus pier, which will be used exclusively by Lufthansa and will have capacity for 6 million passengers annually. It will include six new lounges with 81,000 sq. ft. of space and parking positions for seven widebodies, including four sized for the A380.
