Topics include Aerodrome Design and Operations; Safety and Management Systems; Airfield Marking and Lighting, and Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting. Luton Airport is offering a special traffic lane with additional space for dropping off passengers. But the convenience will cost £1 to use the dedicated area, which offers better lighting and more space to offload luggage. The zone can be used for up to 10 min. A free drop-off facility with transportation to the terminal also is available in the airport's mid-term car park.
International Finance Corp., a member of World Bank Group, is working with Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation to attract private-sector investment for a new terminal at Medina. IFC has advised GACA to form a public-private partnership that would be selected through a competitive bidding process. IFC currently is working with the agency on airport upgrades in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam.

Development and Construction
London Heathrow has begun drilling to create a £260 million, 1.8-km.-long tunnel that will link its baggage handling operations. BAA said the project is part of its £900 million baggage improvement plan and will enable LHR to manage 110 million bags annually by 2012. Bags will be transported via an automated system of carts that travel on rails at speeds of up to 800 m. per min. Work on the tunnel began in February and is expected to be completed by July.
Los Angeles International opened a 12,700-sq.-ft. refrigeration facility that the airport said will expand the local flower trade, reduce local consumer costs for flowers and establish LAX as a new West Coast hub for the flower trade. The $1.1 million facility was built by Mercury Air Cargo and is located at Mercury's complex on LAX property. It will hold up to 8,500 tons of perishable products.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol opened a new Jill&James retail outlet that offers a wide range of services under one roof in Departure Hall 4 in the Schiphol Plaza Shopping Center.
Dallas/Fort Worth International will receive $8.8 million in funds from the American Recovery and Investment Act that will be used for renovation of Runway 13L/31R, including lighting and surface repairs.
Huntsville International opened a parking deck expansion that adds 1,300 spaces to the existing deck for a total of more than 4,000 parking spaces. Expansion is part of a $26 million project that includes roadway improvements, relocation of toll booths and addition or more exit lanes.
Products and Contracts
Montreal-Pierre Trudeau International is testing a fleet of hydrogen-powered service vehicles in collaboration with Natural Resources Canada and Air Liquide, which provide the hydrogen and fueling station. Hydrogen-powered shuttle busses, passenger and utility vehicles will be used in the pilot program.
Dubai Aviation City awarded a contract for construction of Concourse 3 at Dubai International to Al Jaber Engineering and Contraction. Concourse 3 will include 20 gates dedicated to Emirates Airline, 18 of which will be designed specifically for the A380.
Thales won a contract for the delivery, installation and commissioning of the PAM-FRA (Precision Approach Monitoring Frankfurt Air Space system). Thales said this is the first operational wide area multilateration system in Germany and will control airspace around Frankfurt International and Hahn airports.
Motorola and partners Avery Dennison and Print-O-Tape were chosen by Hong Kong International to provide up to 70 million RFID baggage tracking tags. The contract runs for three years with an option for a fourth year. Motorola has been instrumental in implementing HKIA's RFID system.
Sensis Airport Surface Detection Equipment Model X is operational at Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International.
ASIG won a contract to provide ground handling services for Allegiant Air at Los Angeles International.
IBM signed a four-year service contract with Prague Airport to deliver its specialized BlueSky system, which will enable the airport to collect and analyze information to help calculate airport fees and handling charges.
Nice Cote d'Azur and Air France, in partnership with Amadeus and IER, are trialing a new "Pass and Fly" boarding device through Oct. 30 on the Nice-Paris Orly route. It is being offered to members of NCE's Club Airport Premier program and AF's loyalty program. According to the companies, this marks the first use of NFC--a short-range wireless connectivity technology--to enable mobile boarding passes.
Maximizer software was selected by Dublin Airport Authority to provide customer relationship management solutions. DAA will use Maximizer as a reservation and booking system.
SRA International was awarded a contract by US FAA to provide a low-cost ground surveillance solution for small/medium-sized airports within the National Airspace System. The contract is valued at more than $20 million over a five-year period.
SuperShuttle International is offering service between Pittsburgh International and surrounding communities. It is the 33rd US airport US to offer SuperShuttle service.
