Airlines to use biodiesel for ground vehicles at LAX
Eco-Aviation Today, September 2009, p.5
Rentech announced that it has signed a multiyear agreement to supply eight airlines with up to 1.5 million gal. per year of renewable biodiesel--RenDiesel--for ground service equipment operations at Los Angeles International beginning in late 2012 when the plant that will produce the fuel is scheduled to go into service. Initial airline purchasers under an agreement with Aircraft Service International Group, the company that provides fueling services to many airlines at LAX, are Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, UPS Airlines and US Airways.
According to Rentech, the accord is the first of its kind to supply renewable synthetic fuels to multiple domestic carriers. The diesel will be produced from green waste such as yard clippings at the company's proposed Rialto Renewable Energy Center and has a carbon footprint of near zero. Rentech claims that its diesel exceeds all applicable fuels standards, is biodegradable and virtually free of particulates, sulfur and aromatics. It is a drop-in and fully compatible with existing infrastructure.
