Qantas called on Canberra to help develop a sustainable biofuel industry in the country's vast outback. The concept is included in the airline's submission to the Australian government's call for submissions to its National Aviation Policy. The government's green paper does not mention development of a local biofuel industry, which Qantas sees as "critical to the future reduction in airline emissions." It notes that "building an economically sustainable biofuel supply chain is not possible for an individual airline given the huge capital cost requirement and supply chain challenges. Government support and partnerships with industry will be critical to accelerate development."
One of the problems for a biofuel industry in Australia is that jatropha is classified as a noxious weed and that status would have to be reviewed. There is considerable resistance to jatropha and the country has had many disastrous experiences with introduced species of flora and fauna. Earlier this year when ANZ CEO Rob Fyfe and Airbus flagged that Australia could become the world's jatropha "backyard," scientists from the Queensland-based ARC Centre of Excellence for Integrative Legume Research said the idea "displayed a disregard for the Australian environment."
Air New Zealand operated a "tailored arrival" into Los Angeles International last month as part of a trial to prove the procedure's viability into one of the world's busiest airports. NZ Flight 2, a 777-200ER, completed the tailored arrival, which was 30 mi. shorter than a conventional arrival. "Given we operate 747s and 777s on 14 flights per week into Los Angeles from New Zealand, the potential fuel savings are substantial," Chief Pilot David Morgan said. He believes ANZ can save at least 600,000 liters of fuel and 1,500 tons of CO2. Last summer it used a tailored arrival into SFO as part of the Asia and South Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions program. On that flight alone it saved 4,600 liters of fuel and 12 tons of CO2.
Lufthansa Consulting announced a three-phase Emission Trading Service to help airlines wade through the Emissions Trading Scheme. The program includes an ETS impact assessment, creation of a monitoring and reporting plan and implementation of the program including organizational integration
FuelPlus Software launched a product to enable airlines to meet the upcoming EU deadlines for reporting and tracking aircraft emissions. The new software, FuelPlus Emissions, allows carriers to track, report and forecast TKM data and aircraft emissions for every flight and every type of fuel.
Oxford University lauded Sabre Holding's air emissions carbon calculator as "the most detailed aviation carbon calculator in existence."
