Sustainable Aviation, a UK-based coalition of airlines, aerospace manufacturers, airports and air navigation services providers, projects that CO2 emissions from air traffic will fall back to 2000 levels by 2050. In a report issued last month, it concluded that CO2 from all UK civil aviation can return to 2000 levels by 2050 after reaching a peak around 2020 against a background of a threefold growth in passenger numbers. The assessment takes into account the maturation of the UK air transport market and efficiencies that are expected from new airframe and engine technology, cutting-edge air traffic management and operations and the development of sustainable fuels. It does not include airline CO2 reductions arising through participation in cap-and-trade schemes. According to the report:

Emirates successfully launched what it called the world's longest green flight last month with the start of its thrice-weekly nonstop service between Dubai and San Francisco. The 7,150-nm. flight took 15 hr. and used the "Golden Gate" flight path, one of six available. The new route negotiated with Iran, Russia and Canada saved 13,000 lb. of fuel and cut 45 min. off the normal flight time.

Japan Airlines teamed up with Recycle One, the Japanese agency of CarbonNeutral Co., to offer passengers a voluntary carbon offset program beginning next month. CarbonNeutral Co. is the world's leading carbon consulting and offsetting company and was one of the first to offer a carbon offset scheme.
